BPA vs Aluminum vs Stainless Steel Bottles
Bits of the chemical compound Bisphenol A (BPA) are most likely sitting in your pantry right now. Found in reusable hard-plastic items like polycarbonate water and baby bottles as well as in the linings of canned goods, approximately 2.8 million tons of BPA was produced globally in 2002.
Simply put, BPA is everywhere; even in your body. In a 2004 study, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that 95 percent of Americans have the chemical in their system, thanks to trace amounts leeching from things like plastic bottles or migrating from can liners to food.
Long-term exposure to BPA may put you at risk for a gamut of health hazards including breast cancer and uterine fibroids, in women, and prostate cancer and decreased sperm counts in men. No one is unreachable; infants and children could face behavioral problems such as hyperactivity or an early onset of puberty.
Just as polycarbonate plastics leach hazards into your bodies, so do aluminum bottles. To be safe however, some aluminum bottles have created a lining. Many of these linings are coatings that are baked into the interior walls. The potential problem is that, over time, this lining may crack and expose the aluminum beneath it. There also may be some issues with the plastic that is used for these linings as it is often unclear as to the type of plastic used.
In April 2008, Health Canada declared BPA a dangerous substance, making it the first regulatory body in the world to note BPA endangers people and the environment. Read about Canada's Eco-active initiative here.
